Bio

I grew up in the Bay Area and have been a pediatrician at Kaiser Santa Rosa for over 25 years. I have five grown children and many grandchildren. One of the things I like most about Pediatrics is the ability to follow my patients over a long period of time and watch them grow up. I am currently taking care of many of the children of former patients of mine.

I did my undergraduate work at Stanford (Go Cardinal!), medical school at UC, Davis, and my pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. One of the reasons I chose to work at Kaiser Permanente was the emphasis Kaiser Permanente places on keeping people healthy. My goal is to keep my patients disease-free, and for that reason I place a great deal of importance on immunizations and healthy life styles. I also believe in the principle of 'primum non nocere' (first do no harm) and try not to use medicines unless I really feel they are needed.

Interests

Travel to me is not only fun but a chance to learn more about the world. When I learned Spanish 15 years ago, I began traveling in Latin America in part to practice my Spanish. I have been all over Mexico (I especially like Michoacan), and I've been to Cuba three times on medical exchanges. A lot of the music I listen to and the art work in my home has come from these journeys.

We recently purchased a time share at Poipu Beach in Kauai where we spend a lot of time with our children and grandchildren.

Family & Friends

People in my life:

My wife, Patty, is a nurse in the Kaiser Santa Rosa Pediatric Department. We love working together.

My children and people I care about:

My oldest daughter is a nurse in San Diego. My two sons both live in Montana: one is a lawyer and the other is a neuropsychologist. My middle daughter works as a school counselor in Berkeley, and my last daughter works as a nanny.

An interesting story about my family or friends:

My wife won the employee-of-the-month award several years ago and our family photo was in the clinic lobby for awhile. One day a single mother whose kids I took care of came in crying. When I asked her why, she said my family looked so perfect and hers was a mess. I told her not to worry because at any given time any of the people in the photo had been at each other's throats.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

Cuba was an incredible place to visit. We met with Cuban pediatricians and brought them much needed medicines. They have very well trained physicians and a wonderful system for delivering health care, but they are sorely lacking in medical supplies and equipment.
