Bio

Growing up in Palo Alto, I spent several summers in Mexico and a year in Arequipa, Peru. Along with learning some Spanish I gained a lasting appreciation for Hispanic culture and people. After high school I left for Boston to attend Harvard College, and then moved on to Case Western Reserve University for medical school. I was happy to return to California for my residency training.

As to why Emergency Medicine: after my internship in 1984, unsure of what specialty to choose, I spent two years working in Arizona with the Navaho Tribe. I did a little bit of everything there and found work in the Emergency Department to be the most challenging and rewarding. While stressful at times, I enjoy the variety of problems we see. Often there is an opportunity to make a difference, whether by simply helping patients navigate the sometimes frustrating health care system, or intervening in a life threatening crisis.

Outside the hospital, I spend time with family and friends hiking, boating, and camping. I also love to garden and cook. We are lucky to live in a beautiful area and I try to enjoy it as much as possible.
