Bio

I enjoy working at Kaiser Permanente because it is a well integrated system and our Thrive motto is in line with my philosophy of practice that emphasizes prevention, education, and self care.

I immigrated to this country from Romania when I was 15 years old. My undergraduate degree is from Davidson College, NC and I graduated from medical school at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I did my internship and residency training at University of Arizona, where I also had the opportunity to spend some time in Andrew Weil's program on Integrative Medicine.

My professional interests include holistic medicine, prevention, and nutrition. I see my strength as trying to prevent illness, rather than manage it. Over the years I have been studying various aspects of Chinese and energy medicine and I like to consider those elements when evaluating a patient. To me, the foundation of good health consists of good sleep, healthy diet, exercise, spirituality and community. I believe that the patients are in charge of their own health and I am just here as an educator. Sometimes illness presents an opportunity for spiritual growth.

I spend most of my time outside of work with my family. I try to maintain a balanced lifestyle that involves healthy cooking, outdoor activities, reading, and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy traveling, gardening, dancing, yoga, and doing anything artistic.

Interests

A few years ago, in my spare time, you would have found me taking a dance class (belly-dance, salsa, ballroom), taking classes about Oriental practice or philosophy, making art, or somewhere outdoors hiking or camping. However, these days, you'll probably find me around the house, spending time with my lovely daughter, gardening, cooking, or hiking in some nearby outdoors.

My children and people I care about:

My daughter was born at home, naturally, on Christmas day 2006. She has brought such wonderful transfomations in our lives. She is a joyful little girl who has thought me to enjoy life in the present moment.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

A few years ago Stephen and I went to visit the Big Island, Hawaii. There we decided to take a tour of the active volcano. Our tour started far away from the volcano. Initially we walked on grass and dirt, then became hard year-old lava, then days-old hard lava. Before we knew it, we were walking on fresh lava that had just hardened in the last hours. In the cracks of this lava, about 1 foot underneath we could see the hot, molten lava. A light rain started and we were surrounded by mist from the water falling on the hot lava all around us. Finally we reached the point were the hot lava was slowly pouring out from the earth. It was magnificent!

Favorite place in the world:

I've always enjoyed traveling and have visited many places in the world. Some of my favorite places are Florence, Istanbul, the Altiplano lands of South America, Macchu Piccu, and Thailand. I have particularly enjoyed learning about the Native Indian cultures of Central and South America.

However, my favorite place to travel to each year is Black Rock City, Nevada. A music and arts festival occurs there yearly. People from all over the world come and display large pieces of art in the middle of the desert and express themselves in the most creative ways. The culture, art, and expression of the people is amazing.

One of my recent trips:

It seems that Stephen and I have been chasing castles for awhile. A few years ago we visited the Loire Valley in France. Last year we went to Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest, Istanbul, and my home country of Romania. Yes, we even saw Dracula's Castle in Transylvania (Did I mention that I am originally from Transylvania?) Touring the Medieval Castles in each place was a marvelous history lesson about Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
