Bio

I was born in the Deep South, grew up in the Midwest and moved to Northern California to start my professional career at Kaiser Permanente in Emergency Medicine. I believe that Sonoma County is the best place in the world to live. Here in Sonoma County, the recreational opportunities, natural beauty, and good food make it an exceptional place to be.

As a medical student at Tulane University, my first real medical experiences were in the E.R. It was there that my passion for Emergency Medicine started. Emergency Medicine is exciting, and offers unique challenges. My job enables me to intervene in the treatment of diseases early, when it matters most.

I started my career at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco in 1992, and transferred to Santa Rosa in 1996, after the birth of my first child. Here at Kaiser Permanente, I feel free to do what's best for my patients. Our integrated system optimizes physician communication, patient follow-up and provides our members with better health care. At Kaiser Permanente there is an emphasis on preventative medicine which greatly appeals to me.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Emergency Medicine is the frontline in health care. I deal with some of the most challenging problems in medicine. To be a successful ER doctor I have to be able to multitask and deal with many issues simultaneously. All the while, it is important to recognize the difficulties faced by our patients that resulted in their unscheduled emergency visit. These challenges are what make each day unique and exciting.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

I have been working in the Department of Dematology on a weekly basis where I do a minor surgical clinic. This experience is professionally satisifying, and helps add a different perspective to my practice

Great health resources that I refer to:

Harrisons Online. Rosen's Practice of Emergency Medicine. Simon's Clinical Orthopedics.

Interests

You can find me biking in Annadel Park on my days off. I have taken my mountain bike to Moab, Crested Butte, Downeyville and even Belize in search of adventure.

I enjoy gardening and am growing organic apples, peaches, plums and vegetables.

Family & Friends

People in my life:

I am married to Dr. Audrey Desky who is a physician at Kaiser Permanente in the Department of Dermatology. She is a warm and caring person who is the mother of our two wonderful children.

My children and people I care about:

I have two beautiful children. They are active kids who are full of wonder. Both kids enjoy sports and many other activities. They are a joy to be with and help keep me feeling youthful.

An interesting story about my family or friends:

We live in a rural area, and my children once raised ducks. My daughter took a special interest in raising the ducks from hatchlings. After feeding these ducks and being involved in their beginnings, they imprinted on her. For the first 6 months they would line up and follow her everywhere. Finally, as they got older, they flew away. Our pond still gets visited by ducks annually.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

When I finished with my Emergency Medicine residency, my wife and I took a backpack and traveled through Asia for 6 months. We walked around Anapurna in Nepal, went to the desert of Rajastan in India, and traveled to remote islands in Indonesia. These travels as well as others helped me to develop a deep respect for the diversity of people and cultures.

Favorite place in the world:

The most beautiful place on earth was revealed to me while scuba diving off the coast of Suliwasi in Indonesia. This is the most beautiful, colorful and alive coral reef I have ever seen. Truly a magical experience.

One of my recent trips:

I recently took my family camping near Mount Shasta on the Mcloud River. It was here I taught my son how to fish for trout. After several unsuccessful outings, on our last day I urged him to wake up early, before 6 a.m., for one last try. That morning we caught 10 Rainbow Trout.
