Bio

Although born and raised in the Boston area, my father and his family hail from California. A cousin encouraged me to apply to UC Berkeley for college. It proved to be good advice; I got a great education and fell in love with Northern California. Between playing Lacrosse and keeping up with class work, the years went by quickly and I completed my degree in Neurobiology in 1987. From there, I spent a year in a lab doing basic research on erythropoeitin (now famous for it's use as a performance enhancing drug) at Harvard Medical School. A great year, but I was glad to be back in Northern California when I came to UC Davis for Medical School.

During medical school, I enjoyed studying all the medical specialties and realized that, especially with it's fast pace and unpredictability, Emergency Medicine was for me. I did my residency at Highland General Hospital in Oakland and stayed in the East Bay for 8 years while practicing at Kaiser Oakland and Kaiser Richmond.

My wife and I have 3 children, all boys, born in 1997, 1999 and 2000. As the boys got bigger, we fell in love with the open spaces of Sonoma County and moved here in 2005 after building a house in rural Bennett Valley. My wife is also a physician - a pathologist working at Sutter Medical Center. I transferred to the Santa Rosa medical Center in 2007.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Emergency Medicine requires a broad knowledge base, the ability to multitask, and the willingness to tackle whatever comes in the door - from snake bites to heart attacks to delivering babies. It's fun, exciting work, and at end of the day there is exhaustion and a great sense of accomplishment.

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

While working with Kaiser in Richmond I had a special interest in EMS issues and served as Chief of the department for 2 years. I look forward to helping Kaiser Santa Rosa grow and prosper in the years ahead.

Interests

One of the things that makes Sonoma County special to me is the tradition of agriculture and farming. While at UC Davis, I became interested in viticulture and winemaking and have been making wine at home from Bennett Valley grapes for several years. Each year, I make things a little more complicated and increase production, but I find the combination of farming and chemistry fascinating - and the end result delicious.

Family & Friends

My children and people I care about:

I have 3 sons - Diego, Pascal, and Eli. They are close in age and partners in everything - soccer, wrestling on the living room furniture, video games, skim boarding and skiing and snow boarding in the winter.

My pets:

I've always had a dog and usually try to get rescue dogs from the pound. Our current dog, Sprite (yes, named after the soda), is no exception. She's an Australian Cattle Dog - a breed that I didn't learn until after I'd got her is 1/2 wild dog (Dingo, from Australia). She's very high energy and a great watch dog, but will eat anything, including our carved jack-o-lanterns last Halloween.
